ESR: an easy laboratory test useful as indicator of disease and inflammation

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate is an indirect indicator of the acute phase of a disease and increases as consequence of an infectious or an inflammatory status because it reflects the production and levels of acute phase plasmatic proteins (mainly fibrinogen).

Due to this relationship and to the long half-life of some plasma proteins, ESR increase slowly after an inflammatory stimulus and as well as it fall slowly. Therefore, ESR is the best marker for chronic inflammatory conditions and systemic inflammation, for clinical monitoring, following the course of disease over time, and predicting treatment response in many disorders.
